MARCH BOOK: The Black Tides of Heaven by Neon Yang

"If I wasn't going to write the extremely queer Asian high fantasy of my heart, who would?" - Neon Yang, Preface of The Tensorate Series.

The Black Tides of Heaven is one of the two opening novellas of the series.

Black Tides introduces us the Protectorate, in which a ruling class of nobles and monks influence their world through Slackcraft, which works through the fives natures of earth, water, fire, metal and forest. We accompany twins Mokoya and Akeha as they learn about this dangerous world, full of power struggles and strange creatures.

Writing the book supported Yang's own coming out as non-binary. In their words: "As I worked through Akeha's gender journey ... I started to realize that my understanding my own gender wasn't what I thought it was."
